AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix

  OGP Heritage Award
NÜRBURGRING | 12th to 14th AUGUST 2016

- Tremendous fields of entrants at AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix

- Legendary vehicles from pre-war race cars to Formula One from the 80s

- Former and current world-class racers like Jacky Ickx, Klaus Ludwig and André Lotterer to travel to the ‘Eifel’ venue

The AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring (7 to 9 August 2015) will be featuring high-calibre fields this year. Following the close of the registration period, it is clear that the twelve races and two regularity tests in this iconic event for classic cars will be contested by fields that have rarely ever before been as strong or stronger. More than 30 historic Formula One cars will be battling for positions and trophies, and with four dozen entries submitted, the field for the race of the sports cars from the 50s will be completely filled with excellent vehicles. The Vintage Sports Car Trophy / The ASC Trophy, with 50 pre-war vehicles, will be featuring a magnificent field going back as far as to the earliest years of motor racing. A number of highly popular drivers – such as ‘Ring’ legend Klaus Ludwig in the AvD Historic Marathon or the three time-time Le Mans winner and current Audi LMP1 factory driver André Lotterer in the DRM Revival Round – will be taking the wheel. The well-known faces also include sports car icon Jacky Ickx or ex-Formula One and former DTM driver Christian Danner, who will be signing autographs in the paddock. With 20 races, on-track vehicle presentations, fantastic exhibits in the paddock and the big meeting of the marque clubs, visitors can expect to take a three-day journey of racing history packed with diversity and charged with emotion. Tickets for the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix can still be bought in advance at www.eventim.de and by calling the ticket hotline on 01805 311210 (€0.14/minute from the German Public Switched Telephone Network, mobile phone rate max. €0.42). Current information, schedules and entry lists are available on the official homepage at www.avd-oldtimer-grand-prix.de.

- AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix to feature plenty of on-track action from morning to night

- Varied high-calibre programme both on and off the race track

- Strong fields in FIA championship rounds

From 7 to 9 August the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix will transform the Nürburgring into a mecca of historic motorsport. About 600 historic race cars will be competing in more than 20 races and Regularity Tests (GLP) to prove they have not lost their motorsport genes. The highlights of the weekend include the rounds of all three FIA championships: The two FIA Masters for historic Formula One vehicles and sports cars will be competing, as well as the FIA Lurani Trophy for Formula Junior cars. Other crowd-pullers will be the evening race featuring an excellent field of historic endurance race cars on Saturday and the programme for pre-war race cars organised jointly with the Allgemeiner Schnauferl Club (ASC). Major emphasis will be placed on the rounds for touring cars and GTs as well – they particularly include the 25th running of the AvD Historic Marathon on the Nordschleife on Friday, plus the premiere of the Jaguar Heritage Challenge. Races for Grand Prix and Formula 3 single-seaters and presentations of historic vehicles by the event’s partners will round off the programme.  Tickets for the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix are available at www.eventim.de and by calling the ticket hotline on 01805 311210 (€0.14/minute from the German Public Switched Telephone Network, mobile phone rate max. €0.42). Furthermore, all key details of the event are available on www.avd-oldtimer-grand-prix.de.

The AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix programme will be attractive and varied for visitors off the race track as well. But there are a few moments when the paddock will be deserted because everyone wants to witness the action on track. This will particularly be the case when the contenders in the FIA series line up on the grid. The FIA Masters for Formula One race cars is a revival of the legendary era of the three-litre engines. Admitted are vehicles of racing’s top category from 1966 to 1985 – they are linked to driver names such as Lauda, Stewart or Fittipaldi, and the names of the constructors represented have as much of a ring to them as they did back then. In the strong field the spectators will be watching Lotus, McLaren, Williams, Surtees, Tyrrell and Arrows – plus constructions by Token, Merzario, Ensign and Hesketh that have been all but forgotten today. One of the few Germans in the field is a ‘bird of a different feather’: Thomas Steinke will hurl himself into the on-track action in an Alfa Romeo 182B. He is likely to be the only contender in the select field not to be powered by one of the legendary Ford-Cosworth engines. The driver from Hamburg only acquired the historic race car last year and gave it back its original 1980 livery. “I’ve always been an Alfa weekend mechanic and an Alfa fan,” he says. “The Formula One car has made a dream come true for me.”

- AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix is the highlight on the historic race calendar

- New programme features: Jaguar Heritage Challenge, Skoda presentation, regularity test for DTM and STW racing cars

- FIA series for historic Formula One, sports cars and Formula Junior on the grid

Upon publishing the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix regulations, the organisers have announced this year’s programme for the top-calibre classics event at the Nürburgring. From 7 to 9 August visitors can look forward to a weekend with more than 20 high-class races that will again be featuring unique highlights from motorsport history. Special emphasis will be given to touring car and GT racing – for instance in the Jaguar Heritage Challenge, a presentation by the Skoda brand and the regularity test for DTM and STW vehicles in the Touring Car Revival. This also includes the AvD Historic Marathon on the Nordschleife that will be celebrating its 25th anniversary on Friday (7 August), plus the one-hour race for touring cars and GTs up to 1965 on Saturday – featuring the debut of a special class for the legendary Alfa GTA (1965 – 1971) that is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2015.

The Jaguar Heritage Challenge has been incepted this year as a race series dedicated to the prestigious British marque. As the model years represented extend to 1966, the field features plenty of diversity, with various models of the Jaguar XK, as well as the C- and D-types, early E-types, plus the touring cars from Coventry. Five rounds are scheduled for the inaugural year, and the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix offers the only opportunity to watch the Challenge outside the UK. However, Jaguar models have traditionally been successfully fielded at the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix weekend in the AvD Historic Marathon as well. The four-hour endurance race for historic touring cars and GTs opens the on-track action on Friday, this year celebrating its 25th running. Furthermore, a large number of ‘marathon’ participants compete in the one-hour round for touring cars on Saturday or as as part of the Gentlemen Drivers (for GT vehicles up to 1965).

The AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix is an excellent event, as any visitor and participant of the classic festival at the Nürburgring would arguably agree. Accolade of knighthood’ for AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix

The FIA Founding Members’ Club Heritage Cup recognises extraordinary and outstanding achievements in the world of historic vehicles. The organisers are delighted about the FMC membership having selected the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix for the fifth presentation of the award since its inception in 2010: “Within our organisational team consisting of the AvD, C.H.R.S.N, Histomobil and HMSC we go to great lengths every year to host an event with a unique atmosphere focused on safety as well as high-calibre racing,” said AvD Vice President Franz Graf zu Ortenburg. “Our aim is to do justice to the historic automobiles, whilst meeting the expectations that visitors and active participants have of a modern motorsport event. We are delighted about the recognition of these efforts by the FIA Founding Members’ Club and regard the FMC Heritage Cup award as an ‘accolade of knighthood’. It provides us with additional motivation to continue on this path.”
